Patent Day:
Celebrate the 330th anniversary of the signing of the New Paltz Patent, legalizing the land-sale agreement between the Esopus Indians and the New Paltz Huguenots. The New Paltz Patent included almost 40,000 acres on land stretching from the Rondout Creek to the Hudson River. Local residents living in towns that were part of the New Paltz Patent receive free tours today! This includes the towns of New Paltz, Highland, Lloyd, Rosendale, Rifton, Tillson, High Falls, Accord, Rochester, Shawangunk, Marbletown, Plattekill, Modena, Clintondale, Gardiner, Esopus, Ulster Park and West Park.
The day will also commemorate New York’s Dutch and Native American heritage with a lecture by George O'Connor, author of Journey Into Mohawk Country, a historic graphic novel based on accounts of a Dutch trader’s interactions with the Iroquois. The lecture will be at 2:00pm in Deyo Hall.
